Planning for 2017-2018 School Year

We are beginning to plan for the 2017-2018 school year. A planning form will be coming home attached to the report card this Friday. At this point, we are trying to gauge interest in the two initiatives we started this year to help us plan for next year. Please fill out the form and return it to your child's PEACE teacher by January 13th. We appreciate your help.

RSMS Operation Preparation 2016

It is time!

Please consider volunteering to help make this year's Operation Preparation event a meaningful one for our students.

We will host our event on Thursday, March 10th! Volunteers may arrive at 8:00 AM. We will have one on one advising sessions for our 8th graders from 8:30-11:15. We work very hard to make sure our students have the opportunity to speak to someone who is currently working in a field in which he/she is interested. These 15-20 minute sessions are designed to give the student an opportunity to learn more about the field and the advisor an opportunity to discuss the path the student needs to take to have success.

Lunch will be served for all volunteers from 11:15-12:00.

The second half of this event is a traditional College/Career Fair that will take place from about 12:00-2:30. All students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will have an opportunity to visit the booths and learn about a variety of paths they could choose after high school.

It is really important that we start connecting with our middle school students and helping them see the many opportunities they have for a bright future. We need LOTS of volunteers for this event to be successful. Please click on the links at the right for additional information or contact me.

Operation Preparation 2016

I am in the process of planning our annual Operation Preparation event for Royal Spring Middle School students. The event will take place on March 10th. We will provide 8th grade students with one on one advising sessions in the morning from about 8:30-11:30 AM. In the afternoon we are planning to have a traditional college/career fair that all of our students will be able to attend. If you or anyone you would know would be interested in volunteering, please contact me as soon as possible at nellie.poe@scott.kyschools.us or 502-570-2390 EXT 2391. We will need LOTS of volunteers from a wide variety of careers to host a successful event for our students! Please view the links to the right for the information that will be sent home with students and the volunteer form to share.

ILP Completion is Beginning at RSMS

I will begin working with students to complete the required portions of their ILP's this week. I am hoping to work with all students before our holiday break in December. Please ask your child about his/her ILP progress.

The ILP (Individual Learning Plan) is a phenomenal tool for all students. Kentucky creates an account for public school student in grades 6-12. Each year in school there are specific activities that students complete; however, they have access to it and can add information to it at any time. The ILP provides students with an online location for college and career planning.

Things students can do with their ILP:
keep up with accomplishments--service, activities, awards, and recognitions
find career interests and research job outlook
research college paths for careers or just general college information
look for and apply for college scholarships
create a resume
look for jobs

I will have a parent meeting November 5th at the PTSA general meeting to share everything you need to know about the ILP. Please contact with me questions.

Fall MAP Testing

We have just finished our first round of MAP testing. Students completed assessments in math, reading, and language usage. Teachers have been discussing students' growth and goals for the next round of MAP testing that will take place in December. Fall MAP scores were attached to each child's midterm.

Additional information about MAP testing can be found by clicking the link on the side or clicking here.

Operation Preparation--Still Need Volunteers

Operation Preparation is two weeks away and we are still in need of many volunteers to make this a successful event for all of our students.

The morning session will take place on March 13th from 8:30-11:30. All of our 8th grade students will have the opportunity to speak one on one with an adult volunteer who is currently working in a career field that the student is interested in. We are looking for volunteers to talk to students about the appropriate path to take to reach their goals and answer questions that they might have about the job. All volunteers will be served lunch following the advising sessions.

I'm still looking for volunteers to talk to students about the military(1), medical professions(2), performing arts/design(4), CSI/Detectives(1), athletics(2), social worker/counseling(1), technology/animator/video game design(2), veterinarian/biologist(1), artist(1). (The number is how many volunteers are needed.)

Also we would like to have at least 10 more booths for our afternoon College/Career Fair. This is for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Tables are provided. Please come early for a volunteer lunch and then enjoy your afternoon sharing with our students about your career. The fair will take place on March 13th from 12:00-2:30.

If you would be willing to meet with our students about careers in any of these areas, please contact Nellie Poe at 502-570-2390, ext. 1392 or nellie.poe@scott.kyschools.us.
